Hypertension can be prevented with lifestyle changes: Experts

Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is one of the most pressing health concerns globally. Experts and medical professionals continuously emphasize the importance of early prevention, as untreated hypertension can silently damage the body for years before symptoms become apparent. Fortunately, with the right lifestyle changes, this condition can be effectively managed — and even prevented.
Workshop to Raise Awareness
In a commendable move to tackle this growing issue, the District Health Department organized a one-day training workshop aimed at raising awareness about hypertension. The event brought together healthcare professionals, paramedical staff, and ASHA workers to educate them about the risks and preventive strategies associated with the disease.
Health Officials Emphasize Lifestyle-Driven Prevention
Speaking at the event, Civil Surgeon Dr Kirandeep Kaur shed light on the alarming consequences of untreated hypertension. She warned that if left uncontrolled, it could lead to serious complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, stroke, and even death. Dr Kirandeep explained that hypertension is largely a lifestyle disease, fueled by today’s fast-paced routines, excessive stress, junk food consumption, obesity, lack of physical activity, and overeating.
To address the issue proactively, the Health Department is now equipping paramedical personnel and ASHA workers with proper training to identify symptoms early and spread preventive awareness in the community.
Simple Lifestyle Changes Can Make a Big Impact
District Family Welfare Officer Dr Neelam Bhagat echoed these concerns and provided actionable advice. She emphasized the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to combat hypertension, recommending:
Consuming a balanced and nutritious diet
Avoiding processed and high-sodium foods
Practicing yoga and regular physical exercise
Maintaining a healthy weight
Managing stress through mindfulness techniques
Undergoing regular health screenings
Empowering Communities Through Education
Through initiatives like this training workshop, the District Health Department aims to empower frontline health workers with knowledge and tools to combat hypertension effectively. According to Dr Kirandeep, educating the healthcare workforce and promoting community-level awareness are vital steps in reducing the prevalence of high blood pressure and its associated health risks.
With sustained efforts in public education, lifestyle improvements, and early diagnosis, hypertension can be controlled — and even prevented — ensuring healthier lives for all.
