‘Hope release of hostages will…’: PM Modi reacts to Trump’s Gaza peace deal, hails Israel's Netanyahu

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the initial phase of former US President Donald Trump’s peace plan between Israel and Hamas, expressing optimism that it would “pave the way for lasting peace” in the war-torn Gaza region.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “We welcome the agreement on the first phase of President Trump's peace plan. This is also a reflection of the strong leadership of PM Netanyahu.” The Indian Prime Minister also emphasized that the release of hostages and the delivery of humanitarian assistance will bring much-needed respite to civilians caught in the conflict and could serve as a foundation for enduring stability in the region.

Modi’s remarks came shortly after Trump announced that both Israel and Hamas had agreed to a US- and Qatari-brokered deal involving the release of hostages and a partial troop withdrawal from Gaza. The agreement, which includes a temporary pause in fighting and the exchange of hostages and prisoners, marks the most significant diplomatic breakthrough in the two-year-long conflict.

India has consistently supported all diplomatic initiatives aimed at restoring peace and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Modi’s endorsement underscores New Delhi’s long-standing position advocating dialogue, de-escalation, and humanitarian relief in regions affected by prolonged violence.

The peace accord comes just a day after the second anniversary of Hamas militants’ cross-border attack that ignited Israel’s devastating military response in Gaza. Indirect negotiations held in Egypt led to an agreement on the initial stage of Trump’s 20-point framework for peace   a plan that, if fully realized, could bring both sides closer to ending the bloodshed than ever before.

Celebrations erupted across Israel, Gaza, and beyond following the announcement. In Israel, families of hostages lit fireworks, while Palestinians expressed hope for an end to the suffering that has gripped the region for years.

If the deal succeeds, it could mark a turning point not only for Israel and Gaza but also for the broader Middle East, which has been reshaped by the conflict, drawing in countries such as Iran, Yemen, and Lebanon. As Modi highlighted, the world now looks forward with hope   that the release of hostages and the humanitarian truce will indeed lay the foundation for lasting peace.
