Haldia Dock Complex Crosses Record 2 Lakh TEUs in 2025, Marks Historic Turnaround
Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), operating under Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK), has achieved a historic milestone by crossing 2.0 lakh TEUs of container throughput in the calendar year 2025. This marks the highest-ever container volume handled by the dock in a single year, underscoring a remarkable turnaround in its operational performance. The milestone was reached at 10:00 hrs on December 17, with 15 days still remaining in the year, highlighting the strong momentum gained by the port.
Breaking Past Previous Records
The 2025 achievement decisively surpasses HDC’s earlier peak of 1,73,288 TEUs recorded in calendar year 2021. After that high point, the port experienced a period of subdued performance, with container throughput declining to 1,14,634 TEUs in 2022 and further dipping to 1,11,213 TEUs in 2023. A clear recovery began in 2024, when volumes rose to 1,60,155 TEUs, setting the stage for the record-breaking surge beyond 2 lakh TEUs in 2025.
This sharp rebound reflects a sustained and well-planned revival rather than a short-term fluctuation, demonstrating renewed confidence in HDC’s capabilities among shipping lines and trade partners.
Key Drivers Behind the Turnaround
Port officials have attributed this record-breaking performance to a combination of focused trade facilitation measures and proactive marketing initiatives. Improved hinterland connectivity, better coastal shipping linkages, and smoother cargo movement have significantly enhanced the port’s attractiveness for containerised trade. These efforts have helped strengthen HDC’s integration with key industrial and consumption centres in eastern India.
Equally important has been the renewed trust of shipping lines and trade partners, who have increasingly chosen Haldia as a reliable gateway for container cargo. This confidence has played a crucial role in restoring growth momentum and unlocking the port’s true container handling potential.
Strengthening Eastern India’s Container Gateway
The milestone highlights Haldia Dock Complex’s growing role as a vital hub for containerised cargo in eastern India. As volumes continue to rise, HDC is positioning itself as a competitive and efficient alternative for exporters and importers in the region, supporting trade growth and regional economic development.
A Collective Achievement
The success has been credited to the collective efforts of Team HDC, terminal operator HICT (JM Baxi Group), shipping lines, trade partners, and other stakeholders. Their close collaboration, operational discipline, and shared commitment to growth have been instrumental in achieving this historic benchmark.
As Haldia Dock Complex closes 2025 on a record high, the achievement stands as a strong indicator of its resurgence and long-term potential. With sustained focus on connectivity, efficiency, and stakeholder engagement, HDC appears well placed to build on this momentum and set new benchmarks in the years ahead.
