Gujarat CM inaugurates ₹249 crore infrastructure and development works in Surat

Urban Development Year 2025: A Major Milestone for Surat
To accelerate urban development and enhance civic facilities, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated development works worth ₹249 crore in Surat under the Urban Development Year 2025 celebrations. These projects were undertaken by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) and the Surat Urban Development Authority (SUDA). Along with this, the Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for additional projects worth ₹109.51 crore, reinforcing the state’s strong focus on planned and inclusive urban growth.

Foundation Stones and Development Projects for a Growing City
At a grand event held at the convention hall of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, CM Patel laid the foundation stone for projects worth approximately ₹242 crore to be executed by the Urban Ring Development Corporation Ltd. (URDCL). In addition, development projects worth ₹600 crore were dedicated to the residents of Surat, marking a significant step towards strengthening the city’s infrastructure and public services.

Visionary Leadership Driving Gujarat’s Progress
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister stated that under the visionary leadership of the Prime Minister, Gujarat and the entire nation are progressing rapidly. Surat, like other cities in Gujarat, is witnessing fast-paced development. Having already set national benchmarks in cleanliness, CM Patel emphasised that cleanliness should become a daily habit for every citizen, ensuring a healthier and more sustainable urban environment.

Outer Ring Road and Citizen-Centric Development
The Chief Minister highlighted that the completion of Surat’s Outer Ring Road will significantly ease traffic congestion and improve commuting facilities for citizens. He noted that today’s development model is centred around the common citizen across all sectors. Reflecting on the state’s progress, he remarked that projects which once faced hurdles even at a small scale are now being executed seamlessly on a much larger scale.

Focus on Environment, Green Cover, and Water Conservation
Considering the changing rainfall patterns due to global warming, CM Patel urged citizens to actively participate in environmental conservation. He encouraged tree plantation under the “Ek Ped Maa ke Naam” initiative to expand green cover and called for effective rainwater harvesting and water conservation to ensure sustainable use of natural resources.

Gujarat’s Coastline and Tourism Growth
The Chief Minister also spoke about the transformation of Gujarat’s coastal and remote regions. He mentioned that Kutch has emerged as a leading tourism destination and that Asia’s largest green energy park has been developed at Khavda. Once-neglected coastal areas have now become gateways to prosperity, contributing significantly to the state’s economic growth and ease of living.

Strong Budgetary Support for Urban Development
Surat District In-Charge and Finance Minister stated that the state government has allocated a substantial ₹30,000 crore budget for urban development in 2025–26. The government remains committed to creating new municipal corporations and ensuring adequate budgetary support alongside their formation to manage rapid urbanisation effectively.

Surat: A Fastest-Developing Global City
Urbanisation in Gujarat is advancing rapidly, and Surat stands out as a major development hub between Bharuch and Umargam. With advanced infrastructure planning, the city has become a centre for employment, industrial growth, and tourism. Today, Surat is recognised as one of the fastest-developing cities in the world.

Strengthening Infrastructure Across New and Existing Areas
Surat Municipal Corporation Commissioner Shalini Agrawal welcomed the dignitaries and noted that development works worth ₹600 crore will help establish robust infrastructure in newly developing areas of the city. As 2025 is celebrated as the Urban Development Year, the vision of “Earn Well, Live Well” will guide South Gujarat’s growth through six regional development plans, creating a long-term roadmap for progress.

Key Civic Projects for Better Living
Several development projects were launched to digitalise public services, improve water management, enhance cleanliness, strengthen public health, and upgrade the city’s infrastructure network. Across various SMC zones, foundation stones were laid for water treatment plants, sewage treatment plants, drainage lines, health centres, fire stations, vending markets, and box culverts to improve rainwater drainage.

Outer Ring Road Phase-2 and Traffic Management Initiatives
Under Phase-2 of the Outer Ring Road Project by URDCL, the foundation stone was laid for the Sachin–Palsana to Sachin–Kadodara Junction Outer Ring Road project worth ₹184.20 crore, along with a flyover on the Surat–Kadodara Road Outer Ring Road costing ₹57.65 crore. SUDA also initiated several traffic management projects, including four-way junctions, asphalt roads, and resurfacing works under different Town Planning schemes.

Digital Governance and Citizen-Friendly Services
In line with the Government of India’s Digital India Mission, Surat Municipal Corporation launched an online payment facility through a WhatsApp chatbot. This initiative allows citizens to access municipal services in a simple, fast, and transparent manner, further strengthening digital governance and ease of living in the city.

Conclusion: Building a Future-Ready Surat
The inauguration and foundation laying of large-scale infrastructure projects reflect Gujarat’s strong commitment to sustainable urban development. With focused investments, citizen-centric planning, digital transformation, and environmental responsibility, Surat is set to emerge as a model city, offering enhanced quality of life and long-term growth opportunities for its residents.
