Govt Aims to Make India 5th Largest Shipping Nation by 2047: Minister Sonowal

India has set an ambitious long-term vision to become the world’s fifth-largest shipping nation by 2047, focusing on both shipbuilding and ship ownership. This goal aligns with the broader national roadmap of Amrit Kaal 2047 and reflects the government’s intent to strengthen India’s global maritime standing.

National Maritime Vision for Amrit Kaal 2047

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced the target while addressing the Cochin Marine Seminar (COMARSEM 2026) virtually. He stated that the Government of India is actively implementing policy-driven, infrastructure-led, and investment-focused reforms to enhance the competitiveness of India’s maritime ecosystem.

The seminar is being organised by the Institute of Marine Engineers of India in collaboration with the Directorate General of Shipping, bringing together key stakeholders from across the maritime domain.

Shipbuilding as a Strategic Growth Engine

Highlighting the importance of shipbuilding, the Minister described it as a “mother industry” with far-reaching economic impact. A strong domestic shipbuilding sector has the potential to generate large-scale employment, boost manufacturing capabilities, and significantly contribute to national economic growth.

He also emphasized that a robust shipbuilding ecosystem enhances India’s self-reliance and strengthens maritime security, reducing dependence on foreign-built vessels and technologies.

Focus on Sustainable and Green Maritime Growth

The government’s maritime growth strategy places strong emphasis on sustainability. The Minister underlined that economic expansion must go hand in hand with environmental responsibility and safe living conditions for future generations.

This approach integrates green technologies, environmentally responsible shipbuilding practices, and sustainable port operations to ensure long-term resilience of India’s maritime sector.

Key Government Initiatives Driving the Sector

Several flagship initiatives are shaping India’s maritime transformation. Programs such as Atmanirbhar Bharat, Sagarmala, Maritime India Vision 2030, and the upcoming Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 are creating a comprehensive framework for port-led development.

These initiatives aim to modernize shipyards, strengthen coastal shipping and inland waterways, reduce logistics costs, promote innovation, and attract private as well as foreign investment into the shipping and shipbuilding sectors.

Role of Maritime Professionals and Skill Development

Acknowledging the human capital behind maritime growth, the Minister highlighted the critical role played by marine engineers, ship designers, surveyors, and seafarers. He noted that capacity building, skill development, and adoption of advanced technologies will be key enablers in achieving India’s maritime ambitions.

Investments in training, research, and digitalisation are expected to play a decisive role in building a future-ready maritime workforce.

COMARSEM 2026 and the Road Ahead

The Cochin Marine Seminar (COMARSEM 2026) serves as a vital platform for maritime professionals, policymakers, industry leaders, and academicians to discuss emerging trends, regulatory developments, sustainability challenges, and technological advancements in the shipping and marine engineering sectors.

Expressing confidence in India’s trajectory, the Minister stated that with coordinated efforts from government bodies, industry stakeholders, and professional institutions, India is well-positioned to emerge as a major global maritime powerhouse by 2047.
