Gmp acquire new hybrid straddle carrier

Générale de Manutention Portuaire (GMP), a prominent container terminal operator in Le Havre, France, has recently enhanced its equipment fleet by acquiring 26 hybrid straddle carriers from Kalmar, a leading provider of cargo-handling solutions. This strategic move is part of GMP's ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.
Delivery and Deployment
The initial batch of 13 hybrid straddle carriers was delivered to GMP's Terminal de l’Europe on April 6, 2025, via the Dutch-flagged heavy load carrier FWN Space. The remaining 13 units are scheduled for delivery in July 2025.
Environmental and Operational Benefits
Kalmar's hybrid straddle carriers are designed to reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by up to 40% compared to traditional diesel-powered models. This reduction is achieved through a regenerative power system coupled with a highly efficient diesel engine. Additionally, these hybrid machines operate with significantly lower noise levels, enhancing the working environment for operators and contributing to GMP's goal of minimizing noise pollution.
Investment in Sustainability
This acquisition represents a substantial investment in GMP's green transition strategy. Each hybrid straddle carrier costs approximately €1.2 million and has an operational lifespan of 7 to 10 years. At the end of their service life, the units undergo a local waste recovery process through partnerships with Normandy-based organizations, ensuring responsible disposal and recycling.
Long-standing Partnership with Kalmar
GMP has been collaborating with Kalmar since the early 1990s and has ordered a total of 54 hybrid straddle carriers since 2020. This enduring partnership underscores GMP's confidence in Kalmar's innovative and eco-efficient solutions. Louis Jonquière, CEO of GMP Le Havre, emphasized the alignment of both companies' commitments to safe and sustainable cargo handling, stating that Kalmar's hybrid straddle carriers have proven to be an ideal fit for their operations.
Future Outlook
The integration of these hybrid straddle carriers is expected to significantly enhance GMP's operational efficiency and environmental performance. By investing in advanced, eco-friendly equipment, GMP not only boosts its productivity but also takes a proactive stance in reducing its carbon footprint, setting a benchmark for sustainable practices in the port industry.
