End of Karnataka power tussle? Siddaramaiah to visit Shivakumar's residence for breakfast today
The political atmosphere in Karnataka appears to be shifting towards reconciliation as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is set to visit Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s residence for a breakfast meeting on Tuesday morning. This development comes amid weeks of speculation about internal tensions and the ongoing power struggle within the Karnataka Congress.
Shivakumar extended the invitation following growing questions about leadership-sharing within the party. Posting on X, he stated that he and the Chief Minister continue to work together as a team and that the breakfast meeting aims to strengthen their collective efforts to deliver on Congress’s promises to the people of Karnataka. The gesture is seen as a move to ease friction and reinforce unity as the government progresses into its second year.
The breakfast meeting follows a high-level interaction between the two leaders on Saturday at Siddaramaiah’s Cauvery residence. Shivakumar described that meeting as a productive discussion on Karnataka’s priorities and the road ahead. However, political observers viewed it as an attempt to calm tensions stirred by supporters of Shivakumar, who have been demanding that he be elevated to the Chief Minister’s position for the remaining 2.5 years of the Congress-led government. This demand is rooted in the alleged power-sharing agreement of 2023, a subject that has repeatedly surfaced, adding pressure on the party leadership.
Saturday’s discussions were attended by Siddaramaiah’s legal advisor AS Ponnanna and focused largely on resolving the impasse. Shivakumar is also expected to visit Delhi soon to meet the Congress high command, a step seen as crucial to bringing clarity and closure to the issue.
After an hour-long breakfast featuring idli-sambar and upma, both leaders once again projected unity. Addressing the media, Siddaramaiah reiterated that there is no change in his stance and that the Congress remains united. He emphasized that both leaders have decided to follow whatever decision the party high command takes and dispel any confusion created by external narratives. He added that some sections of the media have been responsible for portraying internal rifts where none truly exist.
Speaking about the breakfast meeting, Siddaramaiah noted that the gathering took place after Congress General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal advised him to meet Shivakumar along with AS Ponnanna. The conversation also touched upon preparations for the 2028 Assembly elections and upcoming local body polls, signaling that leadership is now focusing on long-term strategy rather than short-term disagreements.
As Siddaramaiah heads to Shivakumar’s residence today, the meeting is being viewed as another step toward resolving internal conflicts and presenting a unified front. Whether it marks a lasting end to Karnataka’s Congress power tussle will largely depend on the decisions taken by the party high command in the coming days.
