DPA commissions India’s first Make-In-India green hydrogen plant at Kandla

In a major boost to India’s green energy transition, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla has commissioned the country’s first Make-in-India 1 Megawatt Green Hydrogen Plant. This pioneering achievement was inaugurated by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, in the esteemed presence of Shantanu Thakur, Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, T.K. Ramachandran, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, and Sushil Kumar Singh, IRSME, Chairman, Deendayal Port Authority, along with senior officials from the Port and Larsen & Toubro (L&T).
A Historic Milestone for Clean Energy
This plant positions India at the cutting edge of clean and green energy technologies, reflecting the country’s unwavering commitment to achieve its Net Zero emissions goals. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the project sets a new benchmark for sustainable innovation in the maritime sector.
The Minister highlighted the swift progress of this ambitious initiative. He recalled that the foundation stone of a 10 MW Green Hydrogen Plant was laid by the Prime Minister on 26th May 2025 in Bhuj, and within a span of just four months, the first 1 MW module has been successfully commissioned an unprecedented pace in the industry.
Speed, Scale, and Skill in Action
The operationalization of this green hydrogen facility entirely built in India is a testament to the core values of Speed, Scale, and Skill that are now driving India’s port sector transformation. Capable of generating approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually, this plant is not just a first-of-its-kind for Indian ports but also a benchmark in maritime decarbonization.
Leadership in Green Maritime Initiatives
Deendayal Port Authority’s green legacy doesn’t stop here. The port previously deployed India’s first Make-in-India all-electric Green Tug, and with this green hydrogen facility, it takes another giant leap toward a future-ready, Aatma-Nirbhar hydrogen ecosystem.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal commended the engineers and workforce behind this complex execution especially L&T’s engineering team for delivering the project with remarkable efficiency and technological precision.
Paving the Way for a Greener Tomorrow
As India accelerates its green transformation, Deendayal Port Authority leads by example inspiring other Indian ports to innovate, adopt eco-friendly solutions, and align with the nation’s climate and sustainability goals.
This commissioning is more than just a technological milestone; it is a bold declaration of intent that India is ready to lead the world in clean maritime energy solutions, ensuring a sustainable and self-reliant future for generations to come.
