Centre to support development of shipping cluster at Dugarajapatnam: Sonowal

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has reaffirmed the Central Government’s commitment to developing a major shipping cluster at Dugarajapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, a move that promises to bolster India’s maritime infrastructure and enhance coastal economic activity. Speaking to the media on board the Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) Shivalik, Sonowal announced that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed cluster is in its final stages of completion.

Boosting India’s Maritime Vision

The establishment of a shipping cluster at Dugarajapatnam aligns with the government’s Sagarmala initiative, aimed at modernising ports and improving logistics efficiency along the coastline. Once developed, the cluster is expected to serve as a hub for maritime services, ship repair, and logistics, attracting investment and generating employment in the region.

A Landmark in India’s Shipping Growth

During the event, Sonowal also flagged off the Shivalik, the first Indian-flagged Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) owned by the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI). The vessel marks a significant milestone in India’s maritime and energy sectors, symbolising the nation’s growing capability in managing and operating large ocean-going carriers.

Strengthening Energy and Trade Connectivity

The VLGC Shivalik, recently acquired and registered under the Indian flag, has carried 82,000 cubic metres of LPG from Qatar and will deliver the cargo at Visakhapatnam and Haldia Ports. This marks a critical step toward ensuring energy security and trade efficiency, while also positioning India as a more self-reliant player in global shipping operations.

Towards an Integrated Maritime Ecosystem

The proposed shipping cluster at Dugarajapatnam will integrate shipbuilding, repair, training, and allied services, helping India tap into its full maritime potential. The Centre’s support underscores a long-term vision to make India a leading maritime hub in Asia, strengthening connectivity, trade competitiveness, and coastal development.

With initiatives like these, India’s maritime sector is steadily navigating toward a future defined by innovation, sustainability, and global leadership.
