Centre plans water metro, logistics hub, shipbuilding centre in Patna

The central government is charting a bold new course for Bihar's river-based transportation and trade with a suite of major initiatives focused on Patna. In a landmark announcement at a workshop in Patna, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, revealed several transformative projects set to revolutionize the state’s inland waterway network.

Water Metro to Redefine Urban Mobility

One of the most ambitious proposals is the introduction of a Water Metro service in Patna. Aimed at connecting both banks of the Ganga River, this clean, efficient, and modern transport solution is expected to significantly ease urban commute and reduce vehicular congestion. The Water Metro would not only be a green alternative for Patna’s residents but also position the city as a model for future-ready, river-centric development.

Shipbuilding and Repair Centre in Patna

To support a thriving inland vessel ecosystem, a state-of-the-art shipbuilding and repair facility will be established in Patna. This centre will not only handle repairs but also be equipped to construct new ships, offering a boost to the maritime sector and generating employment opportunities in the region.

Kalughat Terminal: Gateway to Nepal Trade

In a strategic move to enhance international connectivity, the development of the Kalughat Terminal is also underway. This terminal will play a pivotal role in Nepal-bound trade by linking seamlessly with road and rail networks, turning Patna into a key logistics hub for northern Bihar and neighbouring regions.

Logistics Hub to Empower Local Trade

A comprehensive logistics hub is also on the anvil in Patna, aimed at empowering traders, farmers, and small businesses. With 16 new community jetties being developed across key districts (adding to the existing 21), local communities will gain direct access to river-based markets, opening up new avenues for trade and connectivity.

Upgrading NINI to Centre of Excellence

The National Inland Navigation Institute (NINI) in Patna, already a premier institution in the field of inland navigation, will be upgraded to a Centre of Excellence. This move is backed by fresh investments to modernize and expand its facilities, nurturing a new generation of maritime professionals.

Joint Task Force for Sustainable Development

To ensure holistic growth and sustainable utilization of the Ganga River (NW-1), a Joint Task Force will be formed with the participation of the Bihar Government, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). This task force will explore and implement eco-friendly solutions for the river’s development.

A Vision for Eco-Friendly Transformation

These initiatives signal a major step toward transforming the Ganga into a lifeline for sustainable development in Bihar. With a vision rooted in innovation, connectivity, and environmental consciousness, the central government is laying the foundation for a greener, more prosperous future through inland waterways.
