Can Rohit Sharma continue being India's ODI skipper? Selectors to take call today as World Cup 2027 looms

The Indian cricket landscape is abuzz with anticipation as the selectors prepare to announce the squad for the upcoming ODI and T20I series against Australia. However, the spotlight is firmly on one crucial question will Rohit Sharma continue as India’s ODI captain, especially with the 2027 ICC Men’s World Cup on the horizon?

The Captaincy Conundrum
Rohit Sharma, who will turn 40 by the time the 2027 World Cup arrives, has been India’s backbone in white-ball cricket for years. His leadership brought stability, tactical intelligence, and several key victories. However, with age catching up, the selectors are reportedly deliberating whether it’s time to groom a successor who will definitely be part of the 2027 World Cup squad.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, this will be the primary discussion point in the upcoming selection meeting. The All India Selection Committee plans to discuss Rohit’s future directly with him before making a final decision. Despite speculations, Rohit recently cleared a comprehensive fitness test at the Bengaluru-based BCCI Centre of Excellence, indicating his readiness to continue leading India.

The Return of Rohit and Kohli?
Fans may witness the much-awaited return of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as the Men in Blue take on Australia in a high-voltage white-ball series Down Under this November. The selectors are expected to finalize and announce the squad on Saturday.

Squad Watch: Iyer, Jaiswal, and More
Another key area of interest for fans will be the inclusion of Shreyas Iyer in the T20I squad. While his ODI selection is almost confirmed, thanks to his stellar performance in the Champions Trophy   where he was India’s top scorer   his return to T20Is remains uncertain after missing the Asia Cup.
Given that the BCCI can pick more than 15 players for the series, attention will also turn to the young and dynamic Yashasvi Jaiswal, who may earn a spot in the T20I lineup.

India vs Australia: Series Schedule
India’s tour of Australia promises thrilling cricketing action starting with a three-match ODI series from October 19 in Perth, followed by a five-match T20I series beginning October 29 at Mauka Oval, Canberra, and concluding on November 8 at the Brisbane Cricket Ground.

Unavailable Players: Injuries and Rest
Hardik Pandya remains unavailable as he continues to recover from a quadriceps injury sustained during the Asia Cup. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is also ruled out due to a foot fracture suffered on India’s tour of England. Meanwhile, the selection committee may rest opener Shubman Gill, who has had a packed schedule recently with the Asia Cup and the ongoing Test series against the West Indies.

What Lies Ahead
The decision regarding Rohit Sharma’s ODI captaincy will be pivotal for India’s long-term planning leading up to the 2027 World Cup. Whether the selectors opt for continuity with experience or choose to transition leadership to a younger player will shape the future direction of Indian cricket.
