Boy dies of rabies in Coimbatore

A tragic incident in Coimbatore has once again drawn attention to the deadly consequences of rabies and the urgent need for preventive measures. A 15-year-old boy, identified as Madhikishore from Mettupalayam, succumbed to rabies at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Tuesday.

The Incident
According to reports, Madhikishore was first admitted to a private hospital on October 9 after developing breathing difficulties. Upon medical examination, doctors diagnosed him with rabies in an advanced stage, a point at which the disease is almost impossible to treat effectively.

Medical Intervention and Transfer
After his condition worsened, the boy was referred to the Government Hospital in Mettupalayam for further care. However, as his symptoms progressed rapidly, he was shifted to the Rabies Isolation Ward at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where he was placed under observation and treatment. Despite all medical efforts, Madhikishore passed away due to complications arising from the infection.

A Preventable Tragedy
Rabies remains one of the most preventable yet fatal viral diseases. It is typically transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal, most often dogs. Once clinical symptoms appear, rabies is nearly 100% fatal   making post-exposure vaccination crucial within hours of a suspected bite.

Health experts stress that immediate washing of the wound with soap and water, followed by prompt medical attention and vaccination, can save lives. Awareness, responsible pet vaccination, and community-level prevention efforts are vital in curbing such tragedies.

Public Health Message
This heartbreaking case serves as a sobering reminder that early medical intervention can make the difference between life and death. Parents and communities must be alert to the dangers of animal bites and ensure that all incidents are reported and treated without delay.
