Bhutan King Visits India’s First International Multimodal Logistics Park in Assam

In a significant stride towards enhancing regional connectivity and economic cooperation, Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk recently visited Assam to inspect India’s first International Multimodal Logistics Park (IMMLP). His visit underlines the growing importance of India-Bhutan ties, especially in infrastructure development and trade facilitation.

Welcomed in Bongaigaon District

The King was warmly received in Assam’s Bongaigaon district by Assam Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah. His presence marked a momentous occasion, symbolizing the shared vision between the two countries for stronger economic and logistic linkages.

A Boost for Trade with Neighbours

The IMMLP is poised to revolutionize trade with neighbouring countries like Bhutan and Bangladesh. Strategically located on the banks of the Brahmaputra River and spread over 317 acres, the logistics park is being constructed by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL). Once completed, it will offer seamless integration of road, rail, air, and waterways, creating a one-stop solution for efficient cargo movement.

Tapping into Geographical and Economic Potential

The park’s strategic location near Bhutan, particularly the upcoming Gelephu Mindfulness City—a visionary urban development initiative—adds further value to the project. The IMMLP is expected to unlock immense economic potential not just for Assam but for the entire Northeast region, positioning it as a key hub in South Asia’s logistics network.

King's Visit to the Brahmaputra Inland Water Transport Project

In addition to visiting the logistics park, King Wangchuk also reviewed the progress of the Inland Water Transport (IWT) project under construction on the Brahmaputra River. This project aims to strengthen waterway connectivity and contribute significantly to the region’s sustainable transport infrastructure.

A New Era for Regional Connectivity

King Wangchuk’s visit is more than just symbolic—it represents a new chapter in India’s neighbourhood-first policy and regional cooperation. With the development of the IMMLP and the IWT project, Northeast India is set to become a gateway for trade and transit in the entire South Asian region.
