Empowering India’s Next-Gen Workforce
State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has taken a significant leap toward shaping India’s digital future by partnering with four global technology leaders Ericsson, Qualcomm, Cisco, and Nokia. The collaborations aim to roll out advanced digital skilling programmes at the Bharat Ratna Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute of Telecom Training (BRBRAITT) in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, targeting over 2,000 students annually.
A Strategic Collaboration for Emerging Technologies
The initiative, launched in the presence of Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, will equip students with expertise in emerging fields such as 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), networking, and cybersecurity. The programme is designed not only to train but also to create employment opportunities, with participating companies offering job placements for successful trainees.
Building Centres of Excellence
Under the signed MoUs:
Ericsson will establish a 5G Centre of Excellence, leveraging its global Ericsson Educate platform.
Qualcomm will set up the Qualcomm Institute for advanced 5G and AI training, sponsor training for the first 100 participants, and provide internship opportunities.
Cisco will expand its Networking Academy, offering free online resources in networking, cybersecurity, and IT infrastructure.
Nokia will develop a 5G Centre of Excellence and AI/ML Lab, training 300 students annually in 5G radio, core networks, and AI/ML applications, in collaboration with the Telecom Sector Skill Council.
Driving Innovation Through TIRTC
These partnerships are aligned with the Department of Telecommunications’ plan to establish the Telecom Innovation, Research and Training Centre (TIRTC) at BRBRAITT. Envisioned as a centre of excellence, TIRTC will focus on telecom-specific R&D, product innovation, and entrepreneurship supporting national programmes like Digital India, Skill India, and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
From Vision to Reality
Highlighting India’s potential, Scindia stated, “Today the spotlight is on India. Not because we have the largest market in the world, but because we represent a significant opportunity. As close to 50% of the world’s human resource talent resides in India. Today is the beginning of a new dawn.” He also hinted at future collaborations with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Tejas Networks.
A Step Toward a Skilled Digital Future
The training modules will range from two-week intensive courses to comprehensive 84-hour programmes, with Phase 1 investments exceeding ₹1 crore. Courses will cater to public sector employees, telecom trainers, and industry professionals through short-, medium-, and long-term formats.
Nitin Bansal, Country Head of Ericsson India, emphasized, “India stands at the cusp of a digital revolution, and our success will hinge on how well we skill our people. Skilling is not just about preparing for jobs. It’s about empowering individuals and fostering innovation.”
Conclusion
With BSNL joining hands with top global tech firms, India is taking a decisive step toward building a skilled workforce ready to lead in the era of 5G, AI, and beyond. This initiative strengthens the nation’s position not just as a technology consumer, but as a global innovation hub living up to the vision of making in India and making for the world.
