AEPC Chairman Dr A. Sakthivel calls on Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman
Introduction
Soon after assuming charge as Chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), Dr A. Sakthivel made his first courtesy call on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at her office in New Delhi. The meeting marked an important step in strengthening dialogue between the government and the apparel export industry at the beginning of a new leadership term for AEPC.
Focus on Government Support for Exporters
During the interaction, Dr Sakthivel conveyed his sincere appreciation to the Finance Minister for the government’s continued and proactive support to exporters. He particularly acknowledged key policy measures such as the Interest Subvention Scheme, credit guarantee support for export-linked working capital loans to MSMEs under the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE), and the extension of trade finance support to exports of select products. These initiatives, he noted, have played a vital role in easing financial stress and improving access to credit for exporters.
Challenges Faced by Apparel Exporters
Dr Sakthivel highlighted the pressing challenges faced by apparel exporters, especially micro, small and medium enterprises. Issues related to rising costs, tight liquidity, and intense global competition continue to impact the sector. He emphasized that MSME exporters, who form the backbone of the apparel industry, require sustained financial support to remain resilient and competitive in international markets.
Request for Enhanced Interest Subvention Support
To address these concerns, the AEPC Chairman requested the Finance Minister to consider enhancing the higher cap limit under the Interest Subvention Scheme. He explained that an improved cap would significantly strengthen liquidity, reduce the cost of borrowing, and help Indian apparel exporters compete more effectively on a global scale, particularly in price-sensitive markets.
Strengthening India’s Global Apparel Position
The meeting underscored the government’s strong commitment to supporting the export sector and reinforcing India’s position in global apparel markets. With a shared focus on growth, competitiveness, and employment generation, the interaction reflected a collaborative approach between policymakers and industry leadership to ensure sustainable expansion of India’s apparel exports in the years ahead.
