Strengthening India’s Integrated Logistics Infrastructure

The Government of India has proposed the development of a ₹850 crore Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) at Nashik, Maharashtra, as part of the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan. The announcement was made by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, highlighting the Centre’s focus on streamlining supply chains and reducing overall logistics costs across the country.

Integrated Freight Hub with Road and Rail Connectivity

The proposed Nashik MMLP is envisaged as a large, integrated freight hub that brings together both road and rail connectivity at a single location. The facility will include modern storage, material handling, and distribution infrastructure to enable seamless cargo movement. By integrating multiple transport modes, the park aims to improve efficiency and reduce dependency on fragmented logistics networks.

Support for Value-Added Logistics Services

Beyond core logistics operations, the multi-modal park is expected to support several value-added activities. These include sorting, grading, packaging, labelling, and light assembly, which are crucial for modern supply chains. Such services will help businesses reduce turnaround times and enhance operational flexibility while adding greater value to goods moving through the region.

Reducing Costs and Improving Supply Chain Efficiency

According to the government, MMLPs play a vital role in improving logistics efficiency by enabling the seamless movement of cargo across different transport modes from a single hub. This approach helps cut transportation and handling costs, improves transit times, enhances inventory management, and ensures better end-to-end cargo visibility. The project is also expected to generate employment opportunities and provide a significant boost to regional industries once operational.

Project Development and Phased Execution Plan

The Nashik MMLP is proposed to be developed by National Highway Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML), a company under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. With an estimated investment of ₹850 crore, the project is currently at the appraisal stage and awaiting necessary approvals. Once cleared, development will be carried out in three phases, with the first phase targeted for completion within three years of approval.

Strategic Location and Regional Impact

Strategically located, the proposed site offers strong connectivity via major highways and the Mumbai–Nagpur railway corridor. It is situated approximately 220 km from Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), India’s largest container port. The government noted that the Nashik MMLP would complement JNPT’s operations while significantly strengthening Maharashtra’s logistics and freight ecosystem, easing urban freight congestion and improving overall regional logistics efficiency.

The planned Multi-Modal Logistics Park at Nashik represents an important step under the PM GatiShakti initiative to create integrated, future-ready logistics infrastructure. Once implemented, the project is expected to play a crucial role in supporting India’s growing trade, manufacturing, and distribution networks while reinforcing the country’s position as a competitive logistics hub.
